Racing Through Water and Light – The 917K in Motion

BY Jean-Marie Corre

Jo Siffert at the wheel of the mythical 917K Gulf Racing

When the Gulf Porsche 917K crests the top of Eau Rouge - its azure and orange silhouette blazing against SPA Francorchamps' grey skies -  the artist captures more than just a racing scene: a moment when the mechanics, the courage of the drivers and the visual impact of the Gulf livery bear witness to a golden age.

This 1/1 watercolor painting by French automotive artist Jean-Marie Corre pays homage to the No. 24 Porsche 917K, the car that won the 1970 Spa 1000 km with Jo Siffert and Brian Redman at the wheel. Synonymous with the best vintage years of endurance racing, the 917K combined brutal power with radical aerodynamics, and remains one of Porsche’s most iconic creations.

The bold Gulf Racing livery set against the iconic Porsche sponsor hoardings were both painted to leave a mark on track and memory alike. The low-angle view magnifies the 917’s aggressive stance, while the fluid watercolor treatment evokes the car’s momentum as it surges uphill through the legendary Raidillon. Every brushstroke brings to life what made the 917K a legend : its flat-12 engine fury, its balance at high speed, and its fearless pilots. Yet in this artwork, it becomes something more — a moment of mechanical theatre, immortalized in color and contrast.

Whether you’re a Porsche collector, a connoisseur of WEC endurance racing, or a lover of motorsport’s most dramatic machines, this one-of-a-kind painting offers a vivid tribute to the car that conquered SPA Francorchamps in the most elegant way possible.

For display, collection or legacy - gift this Porsche 917K Gulf Racing watercolor where this endurance racing legend is immortalized in an exceptional work of automotive art.

  • The 917K: A Collector’s Crown Jewel

Introduced in 1969, the Porsche 917 initially struggled with stability - until the “Kurzheck” (K for “short tail”) variant was developed, transforming it into a race winner. Its flat-12 engine, capable of over 600 hp, produced a sound as legendary as its performance.

The 917K claimed Porsche’s first overall victory at Le Mans in 1970, cementing its myth. Collectors revere it not just for results, but for its cultural footprint - including its starring role in Steve McQueen’s film Le Mans. Each chassis has its own story; many were rebodied or raced under different teams, making provenance crucial. With only a few dozen originals produced, authentic 917Ks are among the most valuable race cars in the world, with auction prices exceeding $14 million.

Gulf-liveried examples are particularly coveted, symbolising Porsche’s golden age in endurance. The 917K also pioneered modular construction techniques, influencing Porsche’s racing philosophy for decades. For many, it represents the ultimate fusion of German engineering, racing legend, and visual drama.

About the Artist.

The eye of an engineer, the soul of an artist

Jean-Marie is a self-taught artist whose passion is closely linked to the vintage cars his father collected. Engineer at a major french car manufacturer and painter in his spare time, he seized the opportunity of the health crisis to fulfill his childhood dream: to become a painter and exhibit his artwork at automotive events.

His work pays tribute to the golden age of motor racing (1950s-60s), a time when drivers were daring adventurers, driven by boundless courage. Jean-Marie strives to capture the essence of these suspended moments: uncovered faces, basic helmets, reflections on curved bodywork...

He composes his canvases like photographs taken by a photographer transported back in time, playing with light, light and shade, contrasts, and atmospheres. Acrylic allows him to enhance the details, while watercolor offers him more spontaneous freedom. Now recognized in the automotive art world, Jean-Marie offers a sensitive and poetic interpretation of classic cars.
