Sculpture Citroën DS 19 - The "Flying Carpet" reborn in Mahogany
A French Citröen Icon Immortalised in the Nobility of Mahogany
Sublime golden leaves sculptural tribute to a timeless icon of French automobile design, this Citroën DS 19 carved in solid mahogany and christened "The Goddess" is part of the "Epures" collection.
Produced in a limited edition of 75 examples on a scale of 1/6, this entirely hand-crafted car sculpture honours the masterpiece of Flaminio Bertoni and André Lefebvre, architects of the aerodynamic profile and air-cushioned suspended chassis that earned the DS its emblematic nickname of ‘flying carpet’.
The DS 19 embodies the avant-garde with its innovative hydropneumatic suspension, offering unrivalled ride comfort, ultra-precise power steering and pioneering power braking. Its refined interior, designed to envelop its passengers in discreet luxury, has made it the preferred choice of statesmen, artists and prestige car collectors.
100% made in France, this sculpture, in which the noble, natural grain of the mahogany is sublimated by gold leaves and a high-gloss varnish, is the fruit of exceptional expertise. Inherited from his father, a coachbuilder, and passed on to his son, our cabinetmaker and sculptor, who has joined forces with his cousin designer-modeler, to create these artistic interpretations of automotive icons known as ‘Epures’. It's a family story, a shared passion for car design and automotive excellence, which has resulted in a creation as exclusive as the legendary DS 19 that it honours.
True automotive collector's item, this piece of mechanical art is aimed at Citroën enthusiasts, discerning collectors and lovers of exceptional craftsmanship, keen to own a fragment of France's automotive heritage.

About the Citroën DS 19 : "The car that saved De Gaulle"
Unveiled at the 1955 Paris Motor Show, the Citroën DS 19 immediately became a legend, revolutionising the world of motoring with its futuristic design, innovative hydropneumatic system and sculptural elegance. In a single day, it recorded 12,000 orders, a first in the history of the automobile.
But the DS was not just a technological masterpiece, it was also a car that made a mark on political history. On 22 August 1962, during the Petit-Clamart attack, the presidential DS managed to escape at full speed, despite its bullet-riddled tyres, thanks to its revolutionary suspension system, thus saving Charles de Gaulle and his wife.
The DS 19 has been featured in a number of cult films (Fantomas, Les Tontons Flingueurs, Back to the Future II), and is inextricably linked with the cinematic imagination. Available in several versions, from the original DS 19 to the DS 23 Pallas, it was voted ‘Most beautiful car of all time’ in 2009 and is now a key part of France's global automotive heritage.

About the artist.
From ancestral know-how to an elite journey
Born in 1975 and descended from a line of bodywork craftsmen, the creator of this automotive sculpture in solid mahogany has always worked the material with passion, sculpting wood with the same precision as his ancestors worked metal.
Graduated from the École Boulle, his talent was recognised very early on, and in 1995 he was awarded the Oscar for Contemporary Creation for his excellence in exceptional craftsmanship.
His love of legendary automobiles, coupled with his family's expertise, naturally led him to revisit some of the most iconic models in automotive history: the Lamborghini Miura, the Ferrari F40, the Porsche 356, the MG A Type, the Bugatti Atlantic, the Aston Martin DB5, the Citroën DS 19 ...
The result is the "Epures" collection, in which each creation becomes a tribute to the elegance and performance of these classic cars. Each handcrafted sculpture is signed by the artist on a plate discreetly integrated beneath the work and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, guaranteeing its origin and value over time.

Behind the scenes.
Discover step-by-step the handcrafting process before the creation of these french automotive masterpieces

Step 1
It all begins with a quest for the finest mahogany, a tree with pure veins and no imperfections. Finding such a treasure in France is a challenge, but it's an essential step : each sculpture comes to life in the meticulous selection of the material that will be worthy of giving it its noble soul.

Step 2
Once the perfect mahogany has been found, it is sliced into thick slabs, then into cubes, each corresponding to the weight of the future "Epure". Each piece is scrutinised from every angle, and only the finest are kept. Then begins the immutable process of natural drying, which lasts an entire year. Before being carved, the wood needs time to breathe in order to reveal all its nobility.

Step 3
Meanwhile, the craftsman sketch out the "Epures" with the help of his cousin, expert in digital modelling. Together, they explore the shapes, test the reflections, adjust the lines of light. The slightest curve, the tiniest incline has an influence on the final elegance of the sculpture. This preparatory work, which takes several weeks, is a quest for balance and perfection. When harmony is finally achieved, machining can begin on wood that has matured over time, gradually revealing the contours of the automotive objet d'art.

Step 4
Then comes the most demanding phase. It is in the hands of the craftsman that the automotive sculpture takes on its full splendour. Every detail is sanded by hand with the utmost precision, while any corners that cannot be machined are chiselled out using the ancestral techniques of master sculptors. With each pass, the grain is refined, until the surface reveals the silky smoothness and incomparable warmth of mahogany. It is in these gestures, repeated with rigour and passion, that the magic of french craftsmanship lies.

Step 5
Finally comes the finishing touch: the patina. Depending on the customer's wishes, the sculpture is given a subtle matt varnish or a high-gloss finish. To achieve that sought-after mirror effect, around ten coats of varnish are applied, each delicately sanded with ultra-fine paper. Each pass sublimates the automobile piece a little more, revealing its elegant curves until it becomes an exceptional object, a timeless work celebrating both the art of the automotive and the excellence of French craftsmanship.
