1970 512S 1000km Spa: A Ferrari V12 Echo Through the Belgian Mist

BY Jean-Marie Corre

Reflections of Power: The Ferrari 512 S at Eau Rouge

When the Ferrari 512 S slices through the rain-soaked asphalt of Spa-Francorchamps, its scarlet form mirrored in the legendary Eau Rouge curve, the artist captures far more than a machine - he reveals the poetry of endurance racing at its most visceral.

This unique 1/1 watercolor painting by French automotive artist Jean-Marie Corre pays homage to one of Ferrari’s most iconic prototypes - the 512 S, a V12 beast built for the grueling challenge of the 1000 km. Depicted here in the 1970 edition of Spa, the car is immortalized in a rare moment of balance between brute power and finesse, as it climbs into the mist-laden heights of the Raidillon.

Driven by legends John Surtees and Jacky Ickx, this particular chassis brought Ferrari to the second step of the podium, battling Porsche and the treacherous Ardennes weather. The artist renders the wet track with restrained precision, the reflections of the 512 S shimmering with intensity. In the background, silhouettes of devoted fans braving the rain offer a human counterpoint to the car’s unrelenting pace.

Every brushstroke celebrates the aggression of its stance, the tension in its curves, and the unmistakable drama of Ferrari red piercing the Belgian grey. It is a tribute not only to a car, but to a moment - when man, machine, and myth met at full throttle under stormy skies.

Whether you’re a connoisseur of Ferrari’s endurance racing heritage, a collector of prototype legends, or a lover of nostalgic automotive art, this one-of-a-kind automotive painting offers a timeless window into one of Maranello’s most courageous battles.

For exhibition, collection or legacy - offer the Ferrari 512 S at Spa reborn in watercolor.

  • Red Velocity: The Ferrari That Challenged Legends

Launched in 1970 to challenge the dominant Porsche 917, the Ferrari 512 P was Maranello’s bold answer in the new 5-litre prototype category. Powered by a 5.0L V12 producing around 550 hp, it combined raw speed with exquisite Italian engineering. Only 25 units were built to meet homologation rules, making it exceptionally rare today.

The 512 P featured a semi-monocoque chassis and distinctive low-slung aerodynamics, later refined into the 512 M (Modificato). Although it never won Le Mans, it scored victories and podiums across endurance races, creating legendary duels — most famously the 1970 Sebring 12h and Brands Hatch 1000 km. It was piloted by an elite roster of drivers: Mario Andretti, Jacky Ickx, John Surtees, and Clay Regazzoni among them.

The car’s design directly influenced Ferrari’s future prototypes and remains one of the most coveted V12 endurance Ferraris by collectors. Surviving examples rarely change hands, and when they do, they command multi-million-dollar prices. The 512 P stands today as a symbol of Ferrari’s daring and beauty at the height of the endurance racing arms race.

About the Artist.

The eye of an engineer, the soul of an artist

Jean-Marie is a self-taught artist whose passion is closely linked to the vintage cars his father collected. Engineer at a major french car manufacturer and painter in his spare time, he seized the opportunity of the health crisis to fulfill his childhood dream: to become a painter and exhibit his artwork at automotive events.

His work pays tribute to the golden age of motor racing (1950s-60s), a time when drivers were daring adventurers, driven by boundless courage. Jean-Marie strives to capture the essence of these suspended moments: uncovered faces, basic helmets, reflections on curved bodywork...

He composes his canvases like photographs taken by a photographer transported back in time, playing with light, light and shade, contrasts, and atmospheres. Acrylic allows him to enhance the details, while watercolor offers him more spontaneous freedom. Now recognized in the automotive art world, Jean-Marie offers a sensitive and poetic interpretation of classic cars.
